Meet Queen Majora Carter
Wearing Lipstick Shade: Samia
Meet Majora Carter, Real estate developer, MacArthur fellow, Peabody Award winning broadcaster, and quoted on the walls of the
Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture:
"Nobody should have to move out of their neighborhood to live in a better one."
Majora believes that talent-retention in low status communities is one of the keys to reducing economic equality gaps. She launched The Boogie Down Grind specialty coffee and craft beer spot in 2017 to address the 3rd Space-Desert condition that compels many accomplished and aspiring people of color to measure their success by how far they get away from where they are from, instead of reinvesting their consumer dollars, financial acumen, and day to day example of success.
In honor of Black History Month, name one black woman you look up to or influenced you and why?
Jill Johnson, founder of weareifel.org, because she has aligned supportive resources for businesses that address real needs and gaps in our knowledge needed to grow our businesses. She really understands the challenges we face and supplies access to knowledge and services in a way that I have not seen anywhere across the US.
What do you love most about what you do?
It is the manifestation of loving my neighbor.
What keeps you motivated during challenging times?
Highs and lows are all temporary. No matter how challenging it gets, things will improve. Just be aware of the flip side of that..Nothing lasts forever - good or bad. As rough as it may seem now, it's been far worse for my ancestors. Great times will come (and go) again.
If you could give your younger self advice what would it be?
Pay more attention to the silence from your "friends" than the words of your enemies.
What is your favorite quote by a Black woman?
"I believe in the promise of America"
-- Maxine Waters
